About Gifted

What is Gifted?
Gifted is the alternative gift programme of Christian World Service (CWS). It has a gift for every occasion – all gifts help people overcome poverty and injustice in their local communities. So your gift gives twice - once for Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s Day, to say thanks or just because  AND once to people in need around the world.

All gifts directly support current CWS community development programmes. Donations to CWS’s work are made on behalf of your gift recipient.

The Gifted programme was developed at the request for fun and meaningful gifts for family and friends. Donors and gift recipients also get a strong sense of what their donations help achieve.

How does it work
Select your Gift from the options—pick the country, gift, outcome or value that suits you best. CWS will send you a paper magnet inside a card with details of what your gift will achieve. You send the card and magnet to your recipient who gets a fun gift. Your purchase becomes a donation, helping people in a developing country build better lives.

What gifts are best?
All gifts make real changes for the better to communities of people living in poverty. They are directly linked to the work CWS funds to; improve access to food and water, health care, education, and human rights as well as providing new income opportunities, environmental protection, and emergency relief. They all contribute to building self-reliance so families and whole communities can look after themselves.

What if a gift is oversubscribed?
Occasionally some gifts may be oversubscribed. CWS will redirect your donation to an equally effective programme. You will still receive the magnet for the gift you ordered.

What is the final date for Christmas orders?
Christmas is the busiest time for Gifted orders. To ensure you receive yours in plenty of time, especially if you need to post the gift on, please order early. Orders that arrive by 20 December will be processed and mailed on that day. Depending on NZ Post you should get it before Christmas but may not have time to mail it on.

Can you send my gift directly to the recipient?

No. We send the card directly to you so that you can personalise the card with your message.  Also, as we get many multiple orders, it would add considerable costs to send out all the orders. This would devalue the donation.

About the Gifts

Where does the money go?
All gifts are linked to current programmes funded by CWS and your donation will be used to support the work of your choice via your gift selection. When you buy a gift, like a goat, you get more than just the goat! You’re helping the livestock programme by providing vaccinations and training for families in caring for their goat. This, for example, helps provide income opportunities by selling the milk.

How can I be sure the money gets there?

CWS has 65 years of proven achievement and expertise working with overseas partners. For humanitarian relief and development work CWS remits funds to its partners quickly. When disaster hits where we have no local partners the money goes through the ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together), a global giant for doing good that we are a member of.  The New Zealand Government has entrusted us with generous sums from their official development assistance fund over the years. This has been regularly reviewed, with rave reviews of our effectiveness. Our last report commended both our long history in poverty reduction and our excellent financial management. Our partners provide regular reports and detailed budgets. They are regularly monitored by CWS staff and independent consultants.

How can I learn more about what the gifts achieve?
For more information on the programmes supported by Gifted, please contact CWS on 0800 74 73 72 or email cws@cws.org.nz

Can I get a photo or report about my gift?
It is not possible to provide individual feedback on each gift. The gifts are donations to a particular part of the programme’s work to improve food, income, services, health, human rights, environmental care, and many other things to give people better lives. We will be adding success stories to this site soon, showing how each featured programme works. In the meantime you can learn more about CWS’s work by visiting www.cws.org.nz. Our @world magazine also features many of the partners. Contact cws@cws.org.nz for a free copy, noting what gift you are interested in. Past issues can be downloaded the CWS website

How do you select the gifts?
We have selected a variety of fun and interesting gifts that represent the range of work CWS funds. All gifts are from existing programmes so are included in partner proposals, budgets and evaluation reports.

How do you work out the value of a gift?

All our gifts are based on programme proposals submitted by our partners in developing countries. We calculate the costs from their budgets. In a limited number of cases, the gift is a contribution to the more expensive wider programme that is delivering the stated outcomes.

Why do the price of goats and cows differ between agencies?

There are many variables including the local market and the type of programme. When you select an animal you are not simply purchasing the livestock. The programme will include training, veterinary check-ups, etc. It may use volunteer or paid labour. The animals may be purchased, donated or bred for the programme. All CWS prices are based on the budgets prepared by our partner organisations.

What about the animals?
A lot of the gifts include farm animals. This is because of their importance to family food, income, health and wellbeing in poorer countries. Over 1 billion poor people rely on livestock for their livelihoods. The animals also provide fuel, pulling power for agriculture and transport and fertilizer for home gardens.
All the livestock programmes supported by CWS provide training in animal care and welfare. Most of the recipients are women, who become very proud of their animals and the responsibility they have been given to care for them.
